Current Champion
Titán is the current champion. He won the championship on December 8, 2019, defeating Soberano Jr. at Arena México. The championship had been vacant following Dragon Lee's firing from the promotion.
History of Championship
Mephisto was the 21st champion, beating Satanico as a continuation of their post-breakup rivalry. Mephisto's championship reign was mostly unnoteworthy, as he and partner/fellow singles champ Averno were presented more often as a tag team or foils for Mistico than as championships on their own.
Mistico picked up the belt in April of 2007, but the championship was mostly dormant for the first half of his title reign. The belt became part of a growing collection of Mistico's championships by the end of 2007 and was notable for being defended in Japan when Averno and Mistico were brought over for a NJPW show.
Negro Casas returned to the rudo side in the summer of 2008 and became a thorn in old partner Mistico's side for next many months, as part of Casas' campaign against all the young tecnicos. Negro finally got a chance at this championship on the 2009 Dos Leyendas show, and defeated Mistico via an unobserved mask pull in the final fall.
Negro successfully defended the championship again versus Mistico the following month, and their continuing feud led to the main event of the the CMLL 76th Anniversario. Negro Casas lost his hair but kept the title. Besides a short feud with Mascara Dorada, Negro wasn't very active with this championship. It was more notable for Casas also winning the CMLL World Middleweight Championship, a rare moment of a luchador holding CMLL branded titles in multiple weight classes simultaneously. Negro did not hold the middleweight title for long, but kept this title.
Negro Casas again defended against Mascara Dorada in September 2010. Dorada was a fast rising star, but already held three belts and it seemed like only a status quo title defense. Instead, Dorada took the final two falls, becoming a four title champion (CMLL World Super Lightweight Championship, CMLL World Trios Championship and Mexican National Trios Championship.)
Despite having all these championships, Mascara Dorada did not have much time to defend it. Mascara Dorada toured Japan in November, then came back home to help defend the Mexican National Trios Championship. The defense was successful, but Dorada hurt a leg during the match. Dorada would be in and out of action over the next two months.
Dorada's first title defense was January 21, as part of the CMLL NJPW Fantastica Mania, 2011 shows. Dorada fell to NJPW's Ryusuke Taguchi in a three fall match. Taguchi had been part of CMLL in 2005, as part of an eight month training journey, and it was expected he'd be returning for at least a short time to defend this championship in the future.
In NJPW event Dominion 6.18 Mascara Dorada won the championship on June 18, 2011, defeating Ryusuke Taguchi at Korakuen Hall, in Tokyo, Japan.

Super Delfin branch
Super Delfin held a claim on this title from 96/03/15 till 96/06/22. Pantera had left CMLL to go to AAA before a tour of Japan. During the tour, he fought Super Delfin for the belt in Osaka, and lost. CMLL did not recognize a title change, deciding instead that Pantera had been stripped off the championship before the title match happened. After Mascara Magica won the vacant title in a tournament, he fought Super Delfin in Naruko, Japan on 96/06/22, winning the match and ending the dispute. Delfin would go onto win the belt three years later but is only considered to have one title reign.
