Current Champion
Syuri won the CMLL World Women's Championship from Marcela on December 12, 2014 during a REINA event at Shin-Kiba 1st Ring in Tokyo.
History of Championship
The CMLL World Women's Champion has been dormant for long stretches of time; women's wrestling has not been consistently promoted by CMLL. From Lady Apache's departure in 2000 to spring 2005, women's matches were rare. (La Diaoblica may have never actually defended the title.) The return of the title and the division were prompted by an increasing popularity of women's wrestling in Arena Mexico, prompted by Canadian wrestler Dark Angel among others.
Marcela won the championship for the first time on 05/09/16. She defeated Dark Angel, the co-finalist of a cibernetico the previous week and held it for nine months.
Hiroka upset Marcela for the belt. She wasn't considered a top wrestler when she won the belt, but built herself up over the title reign. Her biggest win during the stretch was a non-title hair match with Lady Apache. It was Lady Apache who'd eventually beat her for the title.
