Current Champion
Hijo del Vikingo is the current champion. he won the championship defeating Samuray del Sol, Bandido, Bobby Fish and Jay Lethal on December 04, 2021 at Triplemania Regia
History of Championship
The AAA World Heavyweight Championship was created to be the one grand championship in AAA. It's not the first attempt the promotion: the IWC World Heavyweight Championship had this purpose, while the AAA Campeón de Campeones Championship more explicitly tried to fill that void. Both belts failed to catch hold, and became a part of the collection of miscellaneous championships held by AAA wrestlers. The goal of the initial tournament was to take those other titles out of play.
An 8 man tournament was held to determine the first champion. The rules, and structure, of the tournament appeared to change as the tournament was taking progress. The promotion seemed to, after the fact in some cases, stipulate that all tournament matches involving champions were also title matches were possible, causing some wrestlers to pick up book keeping title changes as things progressed.
The final match between Chessman and Mesias had hardcore match elements, as typical for AAA main event matches in this era. Mesias was injured when a planned ladder dive went short. Cibernetico soon involved in himself in the match, and the referee awarded the match and the title to Mesias. Mesias was expected to win the championship, but the finish might have been changed due to the injury. Mesias was carried to medical help after the match.
Cibernetico had a pre-existing rivalry with Mesias, and was clearly set up as the first feud for the title, despite Cibernetico being eliminated earlier in the tournament (due to rudo tricks.) Cibernetico got his first shot at the title at 2007's Guerra de Titanes, with Zorro added to the match as Mesias began to have a breakup with the rest of his Foreign Legion partners. Mesias retained the title on this occasion with help from La Secta, but Cibernetico's partners Los Hellbrothers were able to stop them in the Monterrey rematch, and Cibernetico became the second champion.
After defeating Zorro, who won the Rey de Reyes and also counted on the Foreign Legion's in a failed attempt to win the title, Cibernetico next fought off a challenge from long time ally Chessman. Chessman won a #1 contenders rumble style battle royal to earn the spot. Chessman already was upset about Cibernetico getting the glory while Chessman took the punishment, and their status as champion and top contender only intensified things. After a few false starts, Chessman turned on his friend, but was unable to beat him.
Cibernetico never lost the championship to end his first reign. Instead, he vacated the title on October 24, 2008 at Beisbol Beto Avila, Veracruz after a confrontation between champion with Konnan, whose Foreign Legion team had just won a cage match, making Konnan the man in charge of AAA. Cibernetico declared his contract was with "Dorian" (though he meant Joaquin Roldan and family) and not with AAA, so he was no longer a part of AAA as long as Konnan was in charge. Cibernetico handed his title away, and fulfilled scheduled dates before leaving the company.
Instead of another tournament, now tecnico Mesias and Zorro meant as top contenders for the championship. Mesias defeated Chessman in a cage match at 2009's Rey de Reyes to retain the championship, but would lose to then current UWA World Heavyweight Champion Dr. Wagner Jr. in a match with only the AAA title on the line at TripleMania 17.
Dr. Wagner Jr. won the AAA World Heavyweight Championship in a great match at TripleMania. While the first Mesias/Wagner match was a tecnico versus tecnico match, Dr. Wagner Jr. worked more as a rudo as his championship reign went on (though the crowd still usually supported Wagner over Mesias.) Dr. Wagner successfully defended the championship versus both Cibernetico and Mesias at Verano de Escandalo, 2009 in a cage match, then defeated Mesias on his own at Heroes Inmortales III. However, in both matches, Wagner was assisted in victory by interference from the rest of the Wagner Maniacos.
Mesias was given one more shot at Guerra de Titanes, 2009, with the agreements that it'd be Mesias' final shot, there would be no banned maneuvers, there would be no outside interference, and it'd be held inside the dome cage, with pinfall rules. Despite the agreement, the Wagner Maniacos did come to the ring to interfere, but were waved off by Dr. Wagner. Mesias defeated Dr. Wagner Jr. with a martinete, a move normally illegal, to finally win the championship match.
Also at Guerra de Titanes, 2009, Latin Lover won a cibernetico to win a title opportunity for Rey de Reyes, 2010. Mesias vs Latin Lover seemed set as a tecnico versus tecnico battle, but plans changed before the show. First, Electroshock demanded to be included in the match, feeling he had earned a title opportunity from winning the 2009 Rey de Reyes. After a series of wins, Electro's request was granted, but TNA's Mr. Anderson was also included to make the match a four way. This would be Mr. Anderson's debut match in the promotion.
For reasons yet to be clear, Latin Lover did not appear at Rey de Reyes, 2010. Without him, Mesias, Electroshock, and Anderson had a three way match, first pinfall or submission winning the title. While Mesias was on the outside, Electrshock put Anderson in his trademark submission and won the match without actually defeating the champion.
