English Biography
He was trained by Diablo Velasco. He debuted in 1977, following his older brother Cien Caras. He initally competed under the name, Titán and debuted in EMLL.
He started teaming with brother Cien Caras in 1978 and later on this year, he captured one of his first masks by defeating Black Masquet.
His career started picking up steam in 1982, as he won the NWA World Light Heavyweight Championship on April 2nd by defeating David Morgan. He made three successful defenses and dropped the title to El Faraon on November 16th, 1982.
While he is traditionally known for being a rudo, he was a technico early on in his career. He often was paired with Lizmark and later Atlantis through 1984, and the team became known as Ola Azul (The Blue Wave). He also added another mask to his collection this year as he won the mask of Gran Coloso at CMLL's Jucio Final 1984 on December 7th.
He is said to have turned to the rudo side in 1985 as his brother Cien Caras feuded with Rayo de Jalisco Jr. The feud would go on to span multiple decades. On April 16th, 1986, he and Cien captured the Mexican National Tag Team Championship. The team lost the titles to Masakre and MS-1 on March 26th, 1987, possibly after only one successful defense.
In 1987, Mascara Ano 2000's younger brother, Universo 2000, started teaming with him and Cien. The trio became known as Los Hermanos Dinamita (The Dynamite Brothers) and would go on to become one of the most famous trios in lucha libre history.
On September 23rd, 1988, he captured the biggest win of his career at that point when he won the mask of Mogur, and upper midcard technico.
In 1991, there were plans for a Universo 2000 vs Anibal mask vs mask match. Anibal was a famous main event technico, whose career was winding down due to various injuries and the plan was for him to give a heel the rub on his way out. Benjamin Mora, a promoter and owner of Lucha Libre magazine, had a feud with EMLL and spoiled the plans for the match. EMLL changed their plans and Mascara Ano 2000 was inserted into the match, which he won in front of 18,000 fans.
1991 also gave the Dinamita their first trios title - the Mexican National Trios Championship, They won the titles on August 1st, 1991, defeating Los Movie Stars of Octagon, Atlantis and Mascara Sagrada. In 1992, Antonio Pena formed AAA. In an unsual situation, since CMLL did not own the Mexican National Trios Championship, The Dinamitas were able to bring the titles with them when they jumped to AAA.
Not only did the trios titles go to AAA, but so did Mascara's feud with Perro Aguayo. The feud reached its peak on April 30th, 1993, when they met in a hair vs mask match. The match was filled with controversy as Perro fouled Universo 2000 while Mascara fouled Perro's second, Misterioso. In the 3rd fall, while Universo argued with the ref, Perro fouled Mascara and pinned him to take his mask. This made him the second Dinamita to lose his mask after Cien lost his to Rayo De Jalisco Jr. in 1990.
The team lost their trios titles on April 26th, 1994 to Los Payasos, but were able to defeat them in a cage match on May 27th, 1994.
He captured the IWC World Heavyweight Championship from Perro Aguayo on May 11th, 1995. He was a fighting champion by lucha libre standards as he made six successful defenses. During his reign, he and his brothers returned to CMLL, where they resumed their rivalries with Rayo, Lizmark and Atlantis.
Mascara picked up double hair wins in 1998 as he won the hair of Brazo de Plata and along with Emilio Charles Jr. captured the hairs of Ricky Santana and El Boricua.
Mascara and his brothers remained main event fixtures in CMLL throughout the 2000's and Mascara was involved in multiple apuestas matches with the likes of Villano III, Perro Aguayo and his son, Perro Aguayo Jr., Pierroth Jr. and Shocker.
Mascara started taking more independent dates in 2007 and made few appearances in CMLL from then on(though he and his brother Universo 2000 returned in 2010 as part of Los Invasores). During this time, Máscara Año 2000 Jr. and Hijo de Máscara Año 2000 debuted. While there was confusion over their relationships, Mascara revealed in a 2020 interview that Jr. had rented the name but the less successful Hijo de Máscara Año 2000 was Mascara's nephew. Mascara then announced that a student of his will take the name and become the second iteration of Máscara Año 2000 Jr.
During the 2010's, Mascara's nephews Cuatrero, Sanson, Forastero, and Universo 2000 Jr. debuted and created La Familia Dinamita. Mascara often teamed with and appeared with them.
Mascara is said to be eyeing retirement in 2021. With the retirement of Cien Caras and the death of Universo 2000, he remains the last active first generation Dinamita.
