Profile
Superbarrio, a masked activist who dressed like a wrestler, led political demonstrations demanding democratic changes, wears red tights and a red and yellow wrestler's mask. Rather than fight crime and corruption with violence, he uses his image to organize labor rallies and protests, and file petitions. His real identity was unknown for a long time.
He is the symbol of the Assembly of Barrios, a grass-roots movement of Mexico City slum dwellers that emerged in the aftermath of the 1985 earthquake that did so much damage to poor neighborhoods.
Its a popular hero and social activist in Mexico, the champion of the people who in his youth was a opener pro wrestler in "arenas chicas" cards, had wrestling around Mexico City like el Kalifa (variation name of caliph), his career as Kalifa was short since a back injury forced him to retire of pro wrestling.
He created the character in 1987 to fight for federal funds to rebuild houses for 500,000 people left homeless by a devastating 1985 earthquake, and the ruins neighborhood Super Barrio has born and arises to defend housing rights of victims . In 1988 and as the defender of tenants in the slums took his social struggle in the streets and government offices , but the masked wrestler had a commitment to demonstrate their prowess in the ring decided to present a Lucha libre match in the Historic Center Mexico City would be done the match, but his protest was suspended when police closed the function stealing the ring. In the 90's Superbarrio had a title shot for the IWA World Heavyweight title which holds Mil Mascaras, but could not win.
Over time several rivals in the ring he wrestled , did not win a wrestling title , but beat dangerous opponents as el Nucleosaurio (The Nucleosaur), Gusano de la manzana (Worm of the apple), El Ya ni modo, El Sida (The Aids), El Senador No (Senator No), El Pece, Lluvia acida (acid Rain), La inversión térmica (temperature inversion), Pelicano Asesino (Pelicano Murderer), Tony Tirapalacios (match in Cuernavaca) -, Apocalipsis RIP (match in Aguascalientes)and the Espectacular inmobiliario (Spectacular property) in a match on Parque el Retiro in Spain.
But their most important and famous match was when the mighty Tigre Azcarraga (Tiger Azcarraga) he faced in the ring placed in front of Televisa in 1993.
In 1996 Superbarrio declared himself a "candidate" for the 1996 United States Presidential Election and held "mock" campaign rallies in the United States and Mexico.
His matches are considered more political satires that professional wrestling matches, Superbarrio wrestling character who does not fight for AAA or EMLL nor any promoter of professional wrestling , he fights for the people.
