El Cobarde was born on August 28, 1947 in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. He is the son of Dr. X and the brother of [[El Cobarde II|Impostor]] and [[Convoy]]. He began his career in 1965, alongside [[El Marquez I | El Marquez]] and [[Fishman]]. The name "Cobarde" was not initially accepted by the Boxing and Wrestling Commission due to it sounding unsportsmanlike. He considered changing his name to "Blanco y Negro" but ended up sticking with El Cobarde. He became a local star in Ciudad Juarez and then branched out to the national scene. He started appearing in Arena Coliseo Guadalajara by 1970 in semi-main and main event roles. By 1972, he was wrestling in Arena Coliseo and Arena Mexico. He competed in the 1974 NWA Middleweight Title Tournament, defeating [[Septiembre Negro]]. He lost to [[Anibal]] in the finals in a match that Box y Lucha called the 1975 Match of the Year.
