El Cobarde was born on August 28, 1947 in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. He is the son of Dr. X and the brother of [[El Cobarde II|Impostor]] and [[Convoy]]. He began his career in 1965, alongside [[El Marquez I | El Marquez]] and [[Fishman]]. The name "Cobarde" was not initially accepted by the Boxing and Wrestling Commission due to it sounding unsportsmanlike. He considered changing his name to "Blanco y Negro" but ended up sticking with El Cobarde. He became a local star in Ciudad Juarez and then branched out to the national scene. He started appearing in Arena Coliseo Guadalajara by 1970 in semi-main and main event roles. By 1972, he was wrestling in Arena Coliseo and Arena Mexico. He competed in the 1974 NWA Middleweight Title Tournament, defeating [[Septiembre Negro]]. He lost to [[Anibal]] in the finals in a match that Box y Lucha called the 1975 Match of the Year. He won the mask of [[Oro Negro]] on September 3rd, 1975 and later captured the hair of Tug Wilson on October 30th, 1976.
In September 1977, Cobarde found himself matched up in trios action with [[Fishman]] and [[Sangre Chicana]]. The three had trios matches against each other on September 9th and September 16th, 1977. Cobarde challenged both at the September 16th show and fought bought on September 23, 1977. He defeated both.
