Alberto Munoz relinquished the NWA World Welterweight Championship in late 1973. Munoz suffered a serious head injury in a match months earlier and doctors would not permit him to return to the ring at that time.

EMLL held an eight-person, three-week tournament to determine a new champion. Announced participants by Box Y Lucha.
