In early 2008, CMLL held a 16 team tournament at Arena Mexico over a three week period to determine the next team to get a shot at the [[CMLL World Tag Team Championship]], held by [[Atlantis]] & [[Ultimo Guerrero]].
In early 2008, CMLL held a 16 team tournament at Arena Mexico over a three week period to determine the next team to get a shot at the [[CMLL World Tag Team Championship]], held by [[Atlantis]] & [[Ultimo Guerrero]]. [[Averno]] and [[Mephisto]] won the tag team tournament, and then won the championships on [[February 1]]

[[Averno]] & [[Mephisto]] and 7 other teams
[[Stuka Jr.]] replaced [[Valiente]] in the first block. Valinete was announced as Rey Bucanero's partner and ended up in the second bracket instead. His partner was originally scheduled to be [[Mistico]], but he was pulled from the tournament to work the main event of the 01/18 show instead. [[Super Nova]] replaced him. [[La Mascara]] was originally listed as [[Ultimo Dragon]]'s partner, which would've given him two spots in the tournament. [[Flash]] was announced as the actual partner before the show.
 
[[Sagrado]] was hurt in his quarterfinal match and would not have been able to continue if his team had won.
