In the fall of 2006, AAA started a tag team tournament to crown new champions. (There had been a previous AAA/IWC World Tag Team Championship, but they had been inactive for over a decade, and these titles were treated as new.)

16 teams were entered. On each TV taping, between October 20, 2006 and March 3, 2007, four teams would meet in two tag team matches. The teams participated seemed near random, as some teams got many more matches than other teams, and at least one match up was repeated. In late March, AAA announced the tournament was ending, and the top four teams would move onto four way match at the Rey de Reyes show, to determine the new champion.

Most of the teams were subunits from existing groups. Other teams were random rudos or tecnicos grouped together. One team, Charly Manson and Pirata Morgan, ended up being a team of a rudo and at tecnico, as Manson changed sides while the tournament was ongoing, though it did not play into any of the matches. Another team, Super Fly & Rey Cometa, became Super Fly & Pegasso by the end of the tournament, with no explanation of the change.

Teams recieved 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 for a loss. There was only one draw in the tournament, on the final day of the league format.
