Current Champion

Jack Evans, 5th Champion

Jack Evans is the current champion, defeating former champion Extreme Tiger, Nosawa and Christopher Daniels at TripleMania XVIII

History of Championship

As part of AAA's continuing evolution towards a US style promotion, and as a clear nod to the WCW title of the same division, this championships was created in 2009 to serve as a crown for those not big enough to be in contention for the AAA World Heavyweight Championship. Unlike the Mexican National championships, previously used in this role, all wrestlers are eligible for this championship regardless of home country. No specific weight limit has ever been emphasized for this division.

AAA held a two stage, thirteen man tournament to determine the first champion. As tends to happen in AAA tournaments, it was complicated more than most, though there was a greater emphasis on explaining the tournament. As with the previous tournament for the AAA minis championship, the final was a three way, elimination match.

Alex Koslov became the first champion in Aguascalientes, taking the tournament. The final match saw Extreme Tiger pin Alan Stone, only to be defeated in turn by Koslov.

Extreme Tiger became the second champion defeating Alex Koslov, Alan Stone & Crazy Boy in a Fatal Four Way Match Hardcore Match at Triplemania XVII in Mexico City.

Alex Koslov was in his second reign as AAA World Cruiserweight Champion, winning a five way match featuring former champ Extreme Tiger, Jack Evans, Teddy Hart and Rocky Romero on 8/21/09. Nine days later, Koslov lost a six man cage match (which also included Tiger, Evans, Romero, Hart, and Sugi San), where the loser lost his spot in AAA. The title was then vacated.

Extreme Tiger became the fourth champion by winnin a match at Heroes Inmortales III for the vacant title.
