While the last tournament for the Mexican Trios Championship was held due to a champion not appearing for a single scheduled title defense, this tournament for the Mexican National Trios Championship took place because of the champions stopped appearing entirely.

The champions, Poder Mexica, was unable to defend these trios title when one member, Black Warrior, disappeared from CMLL. The reasons for his absence have never been explained by CMLL, but it appears as though Warrior has retired from wrestling. Poder Mexica had already inducted Misterioso II as a new member to take Black Warrior's place, but the new trio could not defend the old trio's championship.

On December 19th, CMLL announced that the Mexico City Box Y Lucha commission had stripped the champions of their belts and ordered a tournament to declare new champions. Over the next few days, CMLL revealed the tournament would include eight teams, be held exclusive at Arena Mexico, and take place over three weeks of their normal Tuesday show. The matches for the first Block were held on December 20th, the second on December 27th, and the two finalists would meet on a special show on January 6, 2010.
