The IWGP Intercontinental Title is a NJPW championship, and unlike their others titles, the IWGP Intercontinental Championship has been created to defend through the world.

History

The title was introduced during a NJPW tour in the United States in 2011. The inaugural champion was MVP, a former WWE wrestler. La Sombra unsuccessfully challenged Shinsuke Nakamura for the title on January 19, 2013 during second night of FantasticaMania 2013. Months later when Nakamura returned to Mexico, La Sombra anew asked a rematch and on May 31 captured the title. La Sombra became the fifth champion of title and first Mexican to hold the belt.
