This Gronda, the original, has a Superman tattoo on his right arm, and changed his mask after leaving AAA, making it look a bit like a Batman mask. This version of the character got very over with the AAA crowd despite having little to offer besides his look. His work inside of the ring was notoriously awful, even before having a traumatic leg injury during a match.
Groon XXX left AAA over disputes over his pay, changing his name and look just enough to evade a trademark lawsuit. CMLL brought him in occasionally and he worked some matches on the independent scene, but many found his price to appear prohibitively expensive, and his appearances dwindled the longer he was out of AAA.
Groon was originally expected to return to AAA in spring of 2009, to feud with his replacement. Before the angle to kick it off could occur, Groon nearly died after a stomach ailment. After recovering, Groon made his return on the 2009 Verano de Escandalo show.
