The NWA stripped Rene Guajardo of the NWA World Middleweight Championship as part of a break up between Guajardo and EMLL in July of 1973. Guajardo left the promotion months earlier and defended the title multiple times against fellow EMLL departee El Solitario. EMLL pressed the NWA to get involved and the US alliance ruled Guajardo forfeited the belt by defending it on non-NWA shows.
EMLL held a tournament to decide a new champion on Friday nights in September 1974. All matches were held in Arena Mexico.
This tournament marked Tony Salazar's debut with EMLL.
Anibal won the tournament, but would also end up leaving EMLL months later. The NWA would likewise strip him of this championship, though only after he defeated Guajardo to settle any issue.
