The 2016 Guerra de Titanes (Guerra de Titanes, 2016) was held on January 22 in Gimnasio Olímpico Juan de la Barrera, Ciudad de México, Distrito Federal.

This event was originally scheduled for December 4, 2015 in Feria de Tampico, Tampico, Tamaulipas. The show was announced as canceled on November 25th, believed due to ongoing security issues in the area. The show was moved to Mexico City with a different lineup in January. AAA kept the Guerra de Titanes name.

The event has permanently switched from a December show to a January one since this cancellation. Guerra de Titanes, 2017 was also meant to be in the Tampico and also ended up in Mexico City. The 2018 edition was scheduled for Mexico City as planned and it may be the home of the show going forward.

The local promoters also hyped Alberto el Patron, Dr. Wagner Jr. and John Cena as also surprise appearances. Cena's name being mentioned seemed highly dubious. Alberto had recently returned to WWE while still holding the AAA World Heavyweight Championship and would late explain he planned to come back to Mexico to relinquish the championship (though he would not be allowed to lose a match for it.) The promoter might have thought Cena, Alberto's rival in that moment, might have been coming with him. When this December show as canceled, Alberto was no longer allowed to return to AAA for a farewell match. He would not return to AAA until he was advertised for (but did not appear at) Heroes Inmortales X.

There was a lot of change within AAA during the hiatus. Konnan was technically part of AAA when the January show happened, but was no longer responsible for programming the shows by that point and would soon officially be separated from the promotion. It's believed he had a role in putting the December show together and not the January card. It's unlikely that others quit over Konnan being removed, but more specifically quit over the same disagreements that led to Konnan and AAA splitting ways.

Both Johnny Mundo & Rey Mysterio, intended to be in the original main event for the title Alberto was giving up, left the promotion before the January show took place. They would not return until TripleMania that year.

Cibernetico also quit AAA in December of 2015, giving up the AAA Trios Championship and ending the Hell Brothers group. Averno & Chessman would continue on without him as an unnamed team for months.

Steve Pain & Willie Mack were both on the original lineup and no longer used in AAA in 2016.

Angélico did not leave AAA at this point. He did suffer a knee injury, forcing he and Jack Evans to give up the tag team championship. That meant all three championship matches were for vacated titles.

Mesias and Texano would have a match for the vacant heavyweight championship at Rey de Reyes, 2016.

Sexy Star said she suffered a neck injury in a car accident on the way to the show. The story was viewed with suspicion at the time. A month later, Sexy Star refused a match where she and Pentagon Jr. would've lost the AAA World Mixed Tag Championship and announced she was retiring from wrestling to focus on boxing. She would return to AAA in 2017.

  1. vacant title
  2. Keyra was a last second sub for an 'injured' Sexy Star, who appeared to introduce her.
