As tends to happen in AAA tournaments, it was complicated more than most, though there was a greater emphasis on explaining the tournament. [[Alex Koslov]] became the first champion in Aguascalientes, taking the tournament. The final match saw [[Extreme Tiger]] pin [[Alan Stone]], only to be defeated in turn by Koslov.
The title was irregularly defended over the next five years, frequently going many months without being exposed on teleivsion and often used as a way just to get a lot of midcarders onto a show. There were individual feuds teased, but singles matches were much more likely to take place on indy appearances.

[[Extreme Tiger]] became the second champion defeating Alex Koslov, Alan Stone & Crazy Boy in a Fatal Four Way Match Hardcore Match at Triplemania XVII in Mexico City.
In the lead up to [[TripleMania XXII]], AAA declared both this championship and the [[AAA Fusion Championship]] would be unified into a new AAA World Cruiserweight Championship. This championship was retroactively called to be AAA Cruiserweight Championship ("Mundial" had not appeared on the physical belt.) AAA repeated this claim after the event, considering [[Hijo del Fantasma]] the new first champion. Both championship histories are listed on this page for ease of use, but follow AAA's title history scheme.

[[Alex Koslov]] was in his second reign as AAA World Cruiserweight Champion, winning a five way match featuring former champ [[Extreme Tiger]], [[Jack Evans]], [[Teddy Hart]] and [[Rocky Romero]] on 8/21/09. Nine days later, Koslov lost a six man cage match (which also included Tiger, Evans, Romero, Hart, and [[Sugi San]]), where the loser lost his spot in [[AAA]]. The title was then vacated.

[[Extreme Tiger]] became the fourth champion by winning a match at [[Heroes Inmortales III]] for the vacant title.

Current Champion

Hijo del Fantasma, 1st Champion

Hijo del Fantasma, a member of La Sociedad is the current and first champion. He won a 10 way elimination match, including former Cruiserweight Champion Daga. This match, taking place as part of TripleMania XXII on August 17, 2014 in Arena Ciudad de Mexico, is considered by AAA as the start of a championship and not a continuation of the previous championship of (nearly) the same name.

History of Championship

As part of AAA's continuing evolution towards a US style promotion, and as a clear nod to the WCW title of the same division, this championships was created in 2009 to serve as a crown for those not big enough to be in contention for the AAA World Heavyweight Championship. Unlike the Mexican National championships, previously used in this role, all wrestlers are eligible for this championship regardless of home country. No specific weight limit has ever been emphasized for this division.

AAA held a two stage, thirteen man tournament to determine the first champion. As tends to happen in AAA tournaments, it was complicated more than most, though there was a greater emphasis on explaining the tournament. As with the previous tournament for the AAA minis championship, the final was a three way, elimination match.

The title was irregularly defended over the next five years, frequently going many months without being exposed on teleivsion and often used as a way just to get a lot of midcarders onto a show. There were individual feuds teased, but singles matches were much more likely to take place on indy appearances.

In the lead up to TripleMania XXII, AAA declared both this championship and the AAA Fusion Championship would be unified into a new AAA World Cruiserweight Championship. This championship was retroactively called to be AAA Cruiserweight Championship ("Mundial" had not appeared on the physical belt.) AAA repeated this claim after the event, considering Hijo del Fantasma the new first champion. Both championship histories are listed on this page for ease of use, but follow AAA's title history scheme.
