Axxel is one of many grandsons of Santo, but his attempts to name himself as such (El Nieto de Santo) has caused a split in the Santo family. El Hijo del Santo claims to hold all related Santo trademarks, as he was the only one of Santo's sons who wrestled.

With control of the Santo of name, El Hijo del Santo sued Axxel to stop using the Nieto name - Hijo obviously wants to save the name for at least one of his sons (and has since introduced him, though he's still years away from wrestling), but has also claimed that Axxel isn't great enough to carry on the high standards of the Santo name. Axxel disagrees, and there are members of the Santo family that agree with him (and disagree with Hijo del Santo's handling of the names), but Hijo del Santo's right to control the Santo name and trademarks has held up to this point.

Axxel still tries to make that connection to Santo as clear as legally possible, wearing a similar mask and being promoted as the grandson of Santo, at times using Santo's birth name instead of the trademarked identity. He's still marketed as Nieto de Santo, even if he can't use the name.

Axxel was very close to his father-in-law, Huracan Ramirez, before his death. They had a shared history of legal entanglements about what names they could use.

Hijo del Santo's standing in the industry has kept Axxel out of major companies. It was likely no coincidence Axxel was rumored to come into CMLL soon after Hijo del Santo split. Axxel is expected to start in CMLL in the next couple of months, perhaps teaming with Mistico.
