Sangre Chicana vacated the Mexican National Middleweight Championship in 1979 for unclear reasons. It might have been part of a failed challenge for the NWA World Middleweight Championship; he ended up in that tournament to decide a new champion anyway.
The tournament to declare a new champion started in April and continued through May. Matches took place at Pista Arena Revolucion, Arena Coliseo, Arena Coliseo Guadalajara, and Arena Mexico on various days of the week. The full extent and participant list is unknown and it's possible all of these matches weren't part of the final tournament.
