Alberto Munoz relinquished the NWA World Welterweight Championship in late 1973. Munoz suffered a serious head injury in a match months earlier and doctors would not permit him to return to the ring at that time.

EMLL held an eight-person, three-week tournament to determine a new champion. Announced participants by Box Y Lucha.

The first round was to take place on November 30th, with a semifinal on December 7th. Nothing is known about match results from that show.

Mano Negra defeated Karloff Lagarde on December 14th to win the championship. Both Halcon and Lucha Libre magazines covered the show with no mention of it being a tournament final.
